真珠貝が長い年月をかけて作り出す真珠は、色も光沢も大きさも形も１つ１つ違います。真珠には多くの種類がありますが、種別する最も大きな基準は２つあります。生息環境〈海水・淡水〉と生育手段〈天然・養殖〉です。残念な事に過去の真珠人気故の真珠貝乱獲により、絶滅した真珠貝も少なくなく、海水・淡水ともに近年ではそのほとんどが養殖です。よって天然の真珠は海水・淡水ともに非常に高価です。
〈海水真珠＜Pearl＞〉海水真珠は海洋、湾、入り江などに生息するアコヤ貝、白蝶貝、黒蝶貝、マベ貝などから採れます。養殖真珠では貝の体内に「核」を入れ真珠層を巻付かせ形成させます。（海水無核真珠はケシと言います。）日本ではアコヤ真珠が養殖されています。中でも花珠と言われる真珠が美しく高価です。
