The Japanese name for iolite is cordierite. It is the birthstone for March

Major production areas are Madagascar and India

It has a Mohs hardness of 7 and is classified as a semi-precious stone.

As the name suggests, it has a bluish violet color and is also called water sapphire because it resembles sapphire. It has very strong pleochroism, and when exposed to light, it changes from ultramarine blue to dry grass color depending on the angle of the surface. Cat's eyes and stars may appear as special effects.

Iolite is a relatively strong stone because it is hard, but it is vulnerable to impact from a certain direction, so be careful not to hit it hard. Resistance to heat and chemicals is not weak.
